The prime minister is already in so much trouble. But the president does not still seem to want to spare him. Friday 1 August was a turning point in the prime minsiter’s decline

President Paul Biya seems determined to destroy Inoni morally and emotionally, even before the much-talked-about dismissal from office and now prison detention over allegations of corruption. And the president seems to be succeeding. The prime minister against running stories of his expected unhappy end, has put up a brave appearance. But it seems that he is now crumbling within.
One of his recent television clips showed him devastated and giving up. This turn in Inoni’s fortunes can be traced to last week Friday, 1 August when many foreboding developments took place with the prime minister at the centre.
On that day President Paul Biya ordered the detention of former secretary-general at the presidency, Atangana Mebara, who had been reporting to the police willingly any time they summoned him to come.
On that same day the president instructed the police to get ready to pick up the prime minister as soon as there was announcement of a change of government that was widely expected on Saturday, 2 August.
It is also on that day that he summoned Inoni to his office on four successive occasions.
Our sources close to the presidency could only say that much. That they saw him come and go, four times over, they themselves were wondering over what had happened because they had never had such a scenario before.
Nobody of course would tell you what the contents of the meeting were. Did the president forget something to say at each meeting?
Our informants say that each time he came out he was grave-looking.
On a previous occasion, the prime minister had once been seen sobbing out of a meeting with the president.
The prime minister who until his appointment in December 2004 had one of the closest and most trusted relationships with President Paul Biya definitely now sees him very very differently and does not believe in how his polticial master and mentor would be so bent to destroy him.
