Ebi Dari, commander of the group said the hostage was killed during a short exchange of gunfire between the rebels and Cameroonian soldiers who were attempting to rescue the hostages.
The French hostage whose name could not be gotten at the time of this report is said to have attempted to escape during the fighting.
Though both the French and
Cameroon governments have refused to comment on the issue Ebi Dari, hinted that both authorities are discussing the issue. While faulting the government of Cameroon for negotiating with Nigerian government rather than the group, Dari warned of further killings if negotiations continue to delay.
The pirates calling themselves Bakassi Freedom Fighters recently hijacked a TOTAL oil ship in
Cameroon waters and took all 10 persons on board hostage. They were seven French nationals, two Cameroonians and 1 Tunisian.
The rebels have asked for the release of two of their men held by Cameroonian authorities in a previous encounter.
However, Ebi Dari, the rebel leader, told a French TV channel,
that they were not demanding ransom
